Version 1.7b   (Jan 97)
=========

     I made a serious mistake in the Create | Library routine in 1.7a - apologies if
you found that the analysis depth of the created library was only one. It was
actually an undefined value, so you could equally have stored all moves, either
way my apologies and assurances that it's now cured.

   As a penance I have managed to make the Create | Library process a little
more efficient. I have also increased the speed by letting you select the depth
of analysis (and given a lower value for the default<g>).

   Another problem that may have puzzled you is that I unintentionally issued
directories OD.BMP and STD.BMP that were empty. These bitmap families
are available from my Homepage as separate zip collections or the Compuserve
chess library in their entireity (DBSBIT4.EXE). If you haven't downloaded the
files, it's best to delete these null directories to avoid confusion.

   Another bug (this one goes back a few versions). Previously, you could only
set up the comment when the game was originally created, now (as intended)
it can be edited later as well.

   PGN output has embedded spaces and e.p. removed for the benefit of Fritz
(which doesn't appear to comply with PGN importation definition).

   As no-one appeared to be attached to it, I've removed the original method of
printing games directly. In the new print routine, I've added the "after move n"
comment, as the board displayed can be anywhere in the game - as shown on
the screen at the time.

  The print routine has a Font selection to allow you to use a non-default font.
If you change the size of the font, please note that the moves are still printed
out in the same position on the page - don't make it too big! There is also a
File | Print Setup to choose a non-default printer.

  A DBS Chess user has produced a version of the manual in PageMaker. Apart
from looking far more professional, it fits into 14 pages of A4. If you can
print out EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) or PageMaker version 5 or 6, just email
me & I will send you a ZIPped file.

    In the Games | Summary there is a option to restrict the selection to those
marked as being those played by "me".

   Finally there is a new option in Edit | Copy to Clipboard. This is to help
those of you with a figurine font to produce output for publishing. For this issue
only I've included a freeware font Cheq TT - this is a true-type font. As there is
a problem with the set of ascii characters required for different fonts of this nature,
I've decided to produce a new sort of file (with extension .TRA) to tell DBSCHESS
which characters to output to the clipboard. The format is defined in a new
Annex J to the manual, together with the address of a net site which I reckon is
a good place for you to start if you wish to go further. I will produce .TRA files
for any other fonts if you supply me with the details I need - see Annex J.

Version 1.7c   (Mar 97)
============

   From now on, I'll only issue new versions of the DEUTSCH.HLP on my homepage.
I'll tell you when there is a new one in future versions of this file. The 8/2/97
one is compatible with 1.7c.

   Multiple import of PGN games: You can now import all the games in a PGN
file into DBS equivalents as files in a new subdirectory/folder.

   "Own games only" option in the text Search.

   There is now a Gauge to look at during Lib | Create. The percentage is of the
games done, not the amount of time elapsed.

   Result of the game is shown in the hit list display. Until you create a new
library, it will show all games as having an undefined result.

   There is a "Tutorial for beginners" in the help file.

   Info | Ages is a little more user friendly.

   The "need to save" a file isn't triggered by trivial events any more.

Version 1.8   (Apr 97)
===========

	About time we had a new version number<G>.

	There is a new version of DEUTSCH.HLP on my Homepage. It contains
two new topics, so if you continue to use the old version you will get "topic
not found" on occasions. Please let me know if you need the German version and
cannot get it from the Homepage - I'll send it direct in that event.

	All the function keys are now assigned ...

	F4 = New Game.

	F5 = Shortcut from SHORTCUT.TXT comments. This file in the root
directory of DBSCHESS is a simple text file of "standard" comments - you can
edit it either with DBSCHESS or a text editor. The idea is that if you are
forever needing comments such as "Oh dear, I hadn't seen that coming", you can
insert it into the comment area without having to type it out in full. (Thanks -
Brother Richard!). You may prefer to use the PGN standard NAG comments - in
which case a suitable file is available from my Homepage.

	F6 = Email window. (Thanks Shea). With the exception of an optional
bit in F12, everything that makes the program set the clipboard also adds the
text to an area you can edit within the program. It makes the composition of
an email reply a good bit easier.

	The "Hits" display not only gives the results of games from the similar
games, but the final totals are also shown. You need to build a library with
version 1.7c or 1.8.

	The F12 display shows the previous date information for the player
making the move. This is to help people who include time elapsed together with
the dates (e.g. "12 Apr : 37") (Thanks Andrew). There is a wider column in
analysis display to allow such formats to be visible.

	"Edit | Copy to Clipboard" has an additional "Moves with Variations"
option. Any comments welcome on this, I'm regarding this as "subject to change".
If you can find a bug of the "mismatched brackets" variety I'll be most upset<G>.
It has options so that you can also include game move comments and/or number
the White variation moves.

==================================

	Any comments welcome, please tell me of any problems (they won't
go away otherwise<g>). If you want some more example games in DBS
format, you can get them from my homepage (see below). It occurs to me that
if you have stopped using the program, you might regard my notices of new
versions as "junk mail" - let me know if this is the case (personally, I get upset
by unwanted mail<G> - but always like to receive comments from you<GGG>).

	Don't forget, I'll happily send you a new version of the manual in Word 2
format whenever your old one is getting a bit out of date! The one you get is
liable to describe features in the next version that I have already implemented.

	All the best - David
